Sloths of Pierella Ecological Garden

Today, we would like to introduce you about the sloths that we have in Pierella Ecological Garden.

Sloths are arboreal animals which means they spend most of their lives above the trees.

There are 2 types of sloths in Costa Rica, the one is Bradypus (Three-toed sloth) and the another is choloepus (Two-toed sloth).

Both sloths have three toes on each rear limb but two-toed sloth have only two toes on each forelimb.

Sloths are named because of their very low metabolism and slow movements.

Their slow movements support their low-energy diet of leaves and avoid detection by predators such as hawks and wild cats.

We have 2 types of sloths in pur garden:

■Three-toed sloth:

They are mostly nocturnal but can be active in the day and love to eat cecropia tree (also known as Guarumo in Costa Rica)

Their diet is consists of several kinds of trees including cecropia.

They go to the ground to urinate and defecate about once a week.

■Two-toed sloth:

Unlike three-toed sloth, they are nocturnal so it’s hard to see them moving during the day.

They eat leaves, flowers, seeds of plants but also they eat insects, small lizards and so on.

In our garden, they prefer to eat almendro tree and rest above these trees during the day.
